The Low-Tech Entry Index

In short

Most reviews tell you which dating platform is best. This one tells you whether you can get into it at all without a smartphone: whether sign-up finishes on a computer, whether you can look before you pay, whether a person answers the phone, whether the text enlarges, and whether you can cancel without ringing anyone. Every answer is something we did ourselves, on a date we print.

What is checked, and how

Five things per platform. Each one is a thing you can do yourself and get the same answer, which is the point — this is a record of observations, not opinions.

  1. Can you complete sign-up in a desktop browser, without a smartphone? We open the sign-up on a computer and go through it to the end. If it stops to demand an app, a text message code, or a camera, we record where it stopped.
  2. Can you see real profiles before you hand over money? We look at what a free account actually shows: whole profiles, blurred photos, or a wall asking for a card.
  3. Is there a phone number, and does a person pick it up?We find the number on the platform’s own site and call it once, in its stated hours, and record what happened.
  4. Does the text get bigger without the page falling apart? We enlarge the text in the browser and check that nothing overlaps, disappears off the side, or becomes unclickable.
  5. Can a paid subscription be cancelled without phoning anyone? We look for the cancel path in the account settings and record whether it is there, or whether it routes you to a phone call or a retention chat.

There is no score, no ranking and no winner here. Which of the five matters most depends on how you want to use a platform, and a single mark out of ten would hide exactly that. The full method is on how we review.

The index

No platform has been checked yet. The columns below are the shape the published index will have.

Nothing has been published here yet. The first rows go up when the checks have actually been run, each with the date they were run on.

We would rather show you an empty table than a full one we invented. Nobody has sat down with these platforms for this index yet, so there is nothing honest to put in the cells — and a row here that was guessed, remembered, or copied from another review site would be worth less than the blank, because you would have no way of telling which was which.

When a platform has been checked, its row appears with the date. Where one of the five was not run, that cell will read not checked rather than being left blank or filled with a likely answer. Nothing here will ever be carried over from an older check without being run again.

If you want to be told when the first rows go up, or you want a particular platform checked first, write tohello@meetover60.com.

Reuse

Cite this index with attribution and a link, in full or a single row. If you find that one of our answers is wrong, or has gone out of date because a platform changed its sign-up, email hello@meetover60.com and we will re-check it and change the date. Corrections are covered in oureditorial policy.
